Turkey eVisa vs Visa on Arrival: Differences Explained for Qatar Travellers

For travellers from Qatar, the choice is rarely “e-visa or visa on arrival”. Türkiye issues visas at the border to only a handful of nationalities, and none of them are common in Qatar. Your route depends on your passport, not your Qatar residence: Qatari citizens enter visa-free, some nationalities get a standard e-visa, many expat nationalities get a conditional e-visa only if they hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa or residence permit, and everyone else applies for a sticker visa in Doha.

At our Doha desk, the Turkey question we hear most is “I have a QID, can I just get the e-visa?” The short answer is no. This guide explains the difference between the two options; if you already know you need a sticker visa, go straight to our Turkey visa service for Qatar residents.

Rules checked against the Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish Embassy in Doha on 8 October 2026.

Which Turkey visa route applies to me?

Your situation Route Where to apply
Qatari citizen Visa-free for tourism and transit, up to 90 days within 180 days No application
Passport eligible for a standard e-visa e-Visa before travel evisa.gov.tr
Passport on the conditional list, and you hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa or residence permit Conditional e-visa: single entry, valid for one month evisa.gov.tr
Same passport, but no valid supporting visa or permit Sticker visa Visa centre accredited by the Embassy of Türkiye in Doha
Travelling to work or study Work or student visa Turkish Embassy in Doha

UK, US and Canadian ordinary passport holders are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Nepali and Sri Lankan passport holders fall under the conditional e-visa rules. Enter your own passport on the official e-visa system to see your exact result.

Does a Qatar residence permit (QID) make me eligible for a Turkey e-visa?

No. Türkiye looks at your passport nationality. A QID is not an accepted supporting document; only a valid visa or residence permit from the US, the UK, Ireland or a Schengen country counts for the conditional e-visa.

What is a Turkey e-visa?

A Turkey e-visa is an official electronic visa issued by the Republic of Türkiye through evisa.gov.tr, a system the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched on 17 April 2013. It is valid only for tourism and commerce. For work or study, visas are issued by Turkish embassies and consulates.

You enter your identity, passport and travel dates, pay the fee online by card, and receive the e-visa. The Ministry says this takes about three minutes. The main benefit is certainty: you know before you fly whether you can board.

Who qualifies for the conditional e-visa, and what are the conditions?

If your nationality is on the conditional list, you must:

  1. Hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, the UK, Ireland or a Schengen country. It must be a sticker-type visa; electronic visas are not accepted.
  2. Be able to show a return ticket and a hotel reservation.
  3. Be able to show at least USD 50 for each day of your stay.
  4. Travel for tourism or business only.
  5. For some passports, fly with named airlines. Egyptian passport holders aged 15 to 45, for example, must travel with Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus, EgyptAir or Air Cairo.

The conditional e-visa is single entry and valid for one month. Your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond your permitted stay, and the Ministry advises six months from arrival. Medical insurance covering your stay is required for all visa applicants.

If your supporting visa has expired, or you are thinking of getting one, see our guides on applying for a Schengen visa from Qatar and the benefits of a UK multiple-entry visa. A Schengen visa also opens other non-Schengen countries.

From our desk: An Indian sales manager living in Doha came to us three weeks before a family trip to Istanbul. His Schengen visa had expired a month earlier, so it no longer worked as a supporting document. With no valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa, he applied for a sticker visa through the accredited centre in Doha instead.

The lesson: check the expiry date of your supporting visa before you book, not after.

Is visa on arrival still available in Turkey?

Not for travellers from Qatar in practice. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs still lists visas at ports of entry for a few passports, such as Antigua and Barbuda, the Dominican Republic and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Nepali, Sri Lankan and Egyptian passports are not among them.

Where a visa on arrival does exist, the Ministry notes that it costs more than the e-visa. Do not fly from Doha expecting to buy a visa at Istanbul Airport; sort out your e-visa or sticker visa before you book.

Turkey e-visa vs visa on arrival: key differences

Turkey e-visa Visa on arrival
Availability Main route for eligible nationalities A few listed passports only
When you get it Before you fly At the port of entry
Where evisa.gov.tr only Turkish border gate
Certainty before boarding High Low
Payment Online by card At the border
Fee Lower Higher than the e-visa
Work or study allowed No No
Eligibility based on Passport nationality Passport nationality

How does the online Turkey e-visa application work?

Open evisa.gov.tr, choose your passport country and travel dates, answer the supporting-document questions if your nationality is conditional, and pay by card. Enter your details exactly as printed in your passport, then save the e-visa on your phone and carry a printed copy.

The only official e-visa address is evisa.gov.tr. Other websites that sell Turkey e-visas are not the government system.

What if I don’t qualify for an e-visa?

You need a sticker visa, applied for in Qatar before you travel. Applications start on the Ministry’s pre-application system at visa.gov.tr and are submitted through the visa centre accredited by the Turkish Embassy. Our page on the Turkish Embassy in Doha has its contact details.

The Ministry recommends applying at least one month before you travel, and visa fees are not refunded if the application is rejected. Use genuine bookings (here’s why dummy tickets cause problems), and read the common reasons Turkey visas get refused before you submit.

Do Qatari citizens need a visa for Turkey?

No. Qatari passport holders are exempt from visa for tourism and transit for up to 90 days within 180 days. See more visa-free destinations for Qatari passport holders.

E-visa mistakes we see most often

  • Using an expired supporting visa. You must enter Türkiye while it is still valid.
  • Using an electronic visa as the supporting document. Only sticker visas and residence permits count.
  • Applying on a site other than evisa.gov.tr.
  • Travelling without the return ticket, hotel booking or proof of funds the e-visa conditions ask for.
  • Booking an airline that is not on the list for your nationality.

FAQs

How much money do I need to show for a Turkey e-visa?

At least USD 50 for each day of your stay, along with a return ticket and a hotel reservation.

Is medical insurance required for Turkey?

Yes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that all visa applicants must have medical insurance valid for their stay in Türkiye.

Can I work or study in Turkey on an e-visa?

No. The e-visa covers tourism and commerce only. Work and study visas are issued by Turkish missions.
