US Joins Mexico, UK and More as World Cup Success Drives Massive Tourism Expansion Across 1,000 Counties ?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup spread tourism well beyond its 11 US host metropolitan areas. U.S. Travel Association research found that international fans travelled through more than 1,000 US counties, with 73% visiting another American destination. Visitors from outside host regions spent 10% above the research baseline, and hotel revenue per available room rose 17.8% across host markets, reaching 35.2% on match days.
The picture is mixed, however. International inbound travel to host cities rose only 0.7% during the tournament, and national arrivals in July 2026 (6.25 million) dipped slightly from July 2025.
Building on the momentum, U.S. Travel Association CEO Geoff Freeman has proposed a target of 100 million international visitors annually by 2030, which the association estimates could add $81 billion in spending and support over 400,000 jobs. It is an industry proposal, not a government commitment. The US Department of Commerce forecasts 85.2 million visitors in 2030, so the goal would need nearly 15 million more arrivals.
Upcoming events, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, could help, but success will depend on affordable flights, accommodation, welcoming entry policies and visa costs.
