Mexico’s Tourism Boom: Baja California Sur Leads a New Wave of Adventure and Sustainable Travel

Mexico Tourism Boom at Baja California Sur

Mexico’s tourism sector is booming, with the country welcoming 26.22 million international visitors in Q1 2026, a 10.2% rise over the same period in 2025. International tourist arrivals reached 12.66 million, generating roughly US$10.28 billion in revenue.

A key driver is Baja California Sur, which is gaining ground as travellers move beyond crowded resort zones toward nature, wildlife and sustainable tourism. Standout destinations include La Paz, known for whale shark encounters, sport fishing, and Espíritu Santo Island’s protected marine ecosystem; Balandra Beach, prized for its crystal-clear waters; Los Cabos, which continues driving luxury and wellness tourism; and Todos Santos, offering boutique stays and cultural charm.

This growth is spreading demand beyond traditional hotspots like Cancún and Riviera Maya, into regions such as Jalisco, Oaxaca, and Yucatán. Adventure and nature-focused travellers tend to spend more on guided experiences and local businesses, encouraging fresh investment in hotels, transport, and tourism services while supporting conservation-focused, sustainable travel models.
